Construction works on tram 5 route from Slokas iela and Jūrmalas gatve junction to the final destination “Iļģuciems” are going as planned
Construction works on the section of tram 5 route from Slokas iela and Jūrmalas gatve junction to the final destination “Iļģuciems” are being executed in various phases. For example, on the section up to Eiženijas iela, works related to the reconstruction of the tracks are ongoing – removal of the asphalt-concrete surface structure of the roadway, excavation of the subgrade, construction of a bearing layer of unbound mineral materials and geocomposite, construction of a stronger frost-proof layer, as well as trenching for the installation of the pipes. Meanwhile, on Lilijas iela, rail welding and grinding of welding points, rail ballasting works have been completed and the construction of rail fastenings will be executed. All construction works are carried out as planned and within the project deadlines.
Jānis Golubevs, Member of the Board of Rīgas satiksme: “When inspecting the section of tram 5 route from the final destination “Iļģuciems” to Slokas iela and Jūrmalas gatve junction, we saw that the construction works are progressing as planned in the project. The construction of the micropile foundations for the installation of 98 contact-line poles has already been carried out throughout the entire site, which means 80% work has been completed. Meanwhile, in the section from Jūrmalas gatve to Pulka iela, 90% of the planned drainage system has already been constructed, and slabs have been laid under the tracks and the construction of the track area drainage has started. At the final destination “Iļģuciems”, ballasting works have been completed and the installation of track fastenings will be started. Work at the substation is also executed as planned. Overall, 60% of the work has been completed at this phase.”
The following construction works on the section of tram 5 route from Slokas iela and Jūrmalas gatve junction to the final destination “Iļģuciems” are being executed:
- reconstruction of the tram tracks in the section of Slokas iela from Jūrmalas gatve to Pulka iela;
- construction of boarding-disembarking and stop platforms, as well as renewal of track structures in stop areas;
- reconstruction of the contact-line structures, including of new supports, and reconstruction of the overhead contact system, to allow the operation of trams equipped with both pantographs and contact bars;
- reconstruction of the low-voltage cables powering the contact-line system and construction of new cables, with connections to the Rīgas satiksme substation at Slokas iela 54B and to the electrical cable connection point at Jūrmalas gatve.
The project will improve environmental accessibility for the elderly, passengers with children and people with disabilities, as well as contributing to an overall increase in the number of passengers on environmentally friendly public transport. The project started in 2021 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. The construction works are co-financed by the European Union Cohesion Fund within the framework of project No. 4.5.1.1/22/I/001 “Adaptation of Riga Tram Infrastructure to Low-Floor Tram Parameters” (hereinafter – the Project).
